Cnag na Cùise (Root of the Matter)

BBC ALBA - Sky channel 168 or Freesat 110 (10 x 30 mins)

cnag-na-cuise2.jpgDerek MacKay chairs a series of Gaelic language discussion programmes tackling some of the ethical and moral issues that face us in today's society.

In each programme, an intimate panel of guests seek to reach the root of some of the main issues that preoccupy many of us in a world that seems to change more rapidly than we can keep up with.

Each of us are familiar with the concept of debt - has spending become too important in society? The panel ponders whether money is the root of all evil.

In our technologically advanced lives, parents are concerned about the choices that their children face - are traditional family values disappearing? As youngsters spend more time on their computers, is technology really taking over their lives? Are the younger generation growing up too fast?

And where can we turn to for spiritual guidance?

It's well known that many people are turning their backs on religion, but Derek asks the panel if this really matters. Could the church communicate its message more effectively?

Environmental issues are a concern, is economic policy being put before the needs of our planet? The panel discusses whether we really care about the environment.

To get to grips with these and other issues and dilemmas, panellists have been invited from a wide age range of backgrounds including health, journalism, education, local government and religion. A small audience also pose additional questions in each show.

The programmes were recorded in Stornoway, Glasgow and Inverness-shire.

Tha droch-fhiachan nan trioblaid nàiseanta agus fiù 's eadar-nàiseanta an-dràsta, a bheil ar cuid cleachdaidhean a thaobh a' cosg airgid nach eil againn a' gabhail buaidh air ar coimhearsneachdan? A bheil an t-airgead ag aobhrachadh uilc?

Tha teic-neòlas timcheall oirnn uile agus tha dragh aig cuid de phàrantan mu na taghaidhean a th'air beulaidh an cuid cloinne, a bheil ceangalan teaghlaich a' lagachadh? Leis an ùine 's a tha clann aig aois sgoile a' caitheamh air beulaidh coimpiutairean, a bheil cus ùidh 's suim againn ri innealachdan ùra mar seo?  A bheil clann ag èirigh suas ro luath?

Cò chuideachas sin? A bheil daoine a'call nan ceangalan spioradail aca? Dè tha na h-eaglaisean a' dèanamh mu dheidhinn? A bheil dòighean ann far am faod iad an teachdaireachd aca a thoirt seachad nas fhèarr?

'S e rud proiseil a th' anns an àrainneachd, ach a bheil sinn a'cur feuman an economaidh air beulaibh feuman a'phlanaid? Dè bu choir dhuinn a bhith a'deanamh gus an àrainneachd a dhìon?
